Based on the review of the materials for this week, compare the risks associated with internal versus external security threats. What are your thoughts on the question of whether internal or external threats pose the biggest problems for organizations? Support your answer with logical commentary and at least one practical example
The internal and external threats can be compared as follows:
The internal accidents often compromise databases, willful attackers on the inside commit a large portion of database breaches. Many are disgruntled employees who use their privileged access to damage their employers. Others are infiltrators who work for outside intelligence or hope to sell information on the black market. Malicious insiders with full access are hard to stop.
The external attacks come from skilled and sophisticated external hackers. These attackers can find network vulnerabilities or socially manipulate insiders to get past outer network defenses. Since an organization’s software applications maintain open connections to IT databases, hackers seek to take control of these applications after they get inside, often by seeking application passwords set to their defaults.
According to my views internal threats are more dangerous for an organisation as here an disgruntled employee has complete access to system resources, while in the external threats the attack is performed by an attacker who doesn't have so much access to resources.
Example: An database administrator in the organization leaks the data of all the employees.
