can cromolyn sodium be substituted for prenisone during an asthmatic attack. Explain your answer.
Prednisone refers to an anti inflammatory steroidal drug primarily used for treating asthmatic attack and other lungs diseases in patients. It is used to treat acute asthma.
Sometimes the prednisone is taken in high doses for a few days. This is called a steroid burst. Hence to overcome this condition it is required to be given in a low dose for long-term asthma control.
To use prednisone on long-term basis there are potential serious side effects like osteoporosis hence supplemental calcium may help to prevent osteoporosis or thinning of the bones.
That’s why there is need of substitution in this therapy hence the use of cromolyn sodium is highly desired, as cromolyn sodium; provides effective asthma control with minimal side-effects at recommended doses.
Furthermore cromolyn sodium inhalation is used to prevent bronchial asthma attacks in adults and children who are at least 2 years old, it is very effective in case of bronchospasm, it is used for the severe and long term effects.
Cromones such as cromolyn & nedocromil have anti-inflammatory activity and are used on occasion to treat allergy-related asthma, they have good safety profiles and side effects are uncommon. Cough and sore throat may occur that is very common and tolerable, and some patients may object to the taste of nedocromil. Complaints of unpleasant or bitter taste which is also tolerable.
