Internet Ethics

The term ethics is understood by any one from the crowd. As we follow daily ethics in our day to day life similarly, we need to follow some guidelines while using the technologies available. Practice of using the Internet has become a regular habit for all of us. Students get information for their projects from the Internet, small kids in school are taught rhymes through videos in the net, Adults surf the Internet for business requirements, leisure time is also spent watching movies and other entertainment divisions. But question is are we being ethical while doing all these?

Let’s take scenario of students using the Internet

While Students get information, it should not be someone else’s work if it happens then the student is being unethical. Let’s take up the scenario of student in our first topic Internet Ethics. A child’s first ethics is taught at home itself where siblings and parents play the major role. If the child isn’t properly trained here then issues occur when they get into an institute. Using the school system for viewing forbidden things like porn, movies, copying copyrighted content and so on becomes unethical. Every single thing on the Internet has two types of content available: Private and public. Not every individual can view everything available on the Internet. It may not be written this is private but technically we need to understand the certain contents are made secured for an individual use. For example, In Facebook we can see everyone stories on their wall but their private data is not visible by us. Getting into others accounts and trying to peep into their works becomes cyber crime and it is unethical. People can get behind bars for these kinds of behavior. What is considered okay to be viewed at home might not be right to view at school because the school holds certain values and guidelines to be followed.

Schools should adhere to certain norms for the students:

  • They can conduct a meeting to keep parents informed about the school activities and enlighten them about Internet Ethics.
  • Keep an eye on the protection of children at school premises and be vigilant about Internet usage and correct them when they are into wrong doings.
  • They can keep a book of policy on what is accepted and not accepted. The websites created should state the purpose of usage by the students. Generally, Internet access should be private and given on request and a password can be entered by the teachers so that they know who is using at the moment and what are they surfing.
  • A good relationship between a student and teacher will overcome so many issues and the students will definitely abide by the policies and norms of the school.

Another scenario we can take is a person using E-commerce website for online shopping. E-commerce is a booming industry and so are the frauds involved in it. E-commerce ethics plays a major role in making your customers feel secure and make sure that their product reaches on time with minimal damage. An e-commerce business man must keep the following things in mind:

The customer gives in lot of delicate information like credit card number, phone number and cvv.

Their email id and password is also been stored in the e-commerce website. The business person should make sure that all these data are highly protected and private. Data theft happens easily and hackers can get this customer information if the database and payment gateways used are low quality. The seller should make sure that his products are listed in a secured way and as the customer cannot see or feel the product physically the appearance of them should be made attractive. The description also plays an important role. Ratings and reviews for a product can be made visible to users so that increase in sales happens and naturally benefits the seller.

Certain guidelines to be followed in e-commerce ethics are:

  • You have to choose the right platform to sell your products. Like use high quality software and firewalls.
  • Listing of products should be clear and appropriate. The images of the products should be of good clarity.
  • Follow the laws present for online selling: Make sure your user requisites and their data are private.
  • Taxes present for each product should be calculated and filed from time to time.
  • Restrictions to certain products for people of age below 18 or 20.
  • If your products are going to fly abroad then the International norms involved should be mentioned in your website.
  • Make sure that you always follow the payment standards mentioned.

The e-commerce businessman should always know what he is selling, whether he is selling a quality product? To whom he is selling and is their data been protected. Always keep a check on whom you are working with to get your products i.e. work with trusted people and maintain a good rapport with them.
