Define broken-case and split-case mentioning which one is resistant to automation and why?
Answer 1.
Broken picking is a type of operation in which individual items are
picked.
The approach to broken picking is made depending upon the volume of
the item to be picked. The volume is generally divided into three
categories low medium and high.
Split case order involves the selection of individual packets into
a carton. There are different Technologies used to derive the
efficiency and accuracy of this operation. There are number of
designs systems in split case picking such as-
Pick to light systems- in this type of system lightning displays
are attached to the pick face of the stock keeping unit in the
picking area.
Put to light systems- this is used when at least one unit of the
stock keeping unit is processed and most of the orders are
received.
Pick to voice and put to voice systems- in this type of Technology
the picker wears a headset. The system voice instruction are given
to the picker. Action is taken accordingly.
Radio frequency systems- it gives the real-time interface to the
picker by a scanner which integrates to the stock keeping unit. It
is the most flexible and accurate mode of order filling.
Good to person- in this type the picker maintains a fixed position
with little reaching the sku point. This technology is better
suited when the volumes are high in operation.
Answer 2
Broken case is Resistance to automation. This is because in a
broken case an order picker is used to pull selected items from the
storage and it is made ready for shipment. The prime duties of the
picker is to place the items in the correct box and load the
