Planning: The Foundation of Successful Management
The word management has its origin in the Greek word "nomos" which means management. Management basically deals with behavioral changes in humans. All the behavioral changes are highly unpredictable and management which change with time and behaaviour evolves not only as a function but also with the people who discharge it, as a group of people have the responsibility to run an organisation and are directly involved with the activities which form the management of that organisation. Henry Fayol, a great economist had stated "to manage is to forecast and to plan, to organise, to command and to co-ordinate.
In layman's language the term management means the process of getting things done by coordinating the activities of people throughout an organisation there are two objective of Management practice that is to get things done efficiently and effectively.
Efficiently is measured as output divided by input veran both input and output may be measured in units of quantity money or time where has effectively means doing the right thing to required standard of quality.
Henry Fayol who is popularly known as the founder of modern Management Theory distinguish between the principles and the elements of Management. He said that principles of management are used for formulating rules and guidelines whereas the elements help in deciding its functions hi group these elements into five managerial functions whitch were:
Planning involves defining the organisation goals, setting objectives for the goals and deciding on action plans and strategiesfo implementation of these goals. For example - a manager of a new local restaurant will need to have a new marketing plan hiring plan and sales plan.
Planning is the fundamental function of Management all other functions of organising staffing directing and controlling must reflect planning function of management. Planning involves writing in advance done and where and how and by whom it is to be done is the most crucial aspect of Management because it projects the of course of action towards the objective of the company.
According to George R Terry - planning is the selecting and relating of facts on the making and using of assumptions regarding the future in the visualisation and formulation of proposed activities believed necessary to achieve desired results. Thus, planning is a process whereby relevant facts are collected and analysed.
Thus, Planning is an analysis of future steps to brought into action to achieve the results which an enterprise has desired for.
