5. How does acute stress disorder (ASD) differ from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)? Include specific elements related to symptom manifestation, duration, and severity.
Hello !
Acute stress Disorder can be the result of an impacting event say something like the demise of a loved one , abuse, having watched something traumatic ,basically this occurs almost immediately ,it can last a duration of 3 days to 30 days ,symptoms may include emotionally drained ,not feeling anything physically or mentally sometimes, numbness, isolation , not wanting to meet or talk to anyone ,avoiding everything. In extreme severe conditions the individual may feel worthless and suicidal tendencies are high.treatment includes medications, counselling and therapy like COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY.
PTSD unlike ASD is the struggle of not being able to come back to normal or in other words not being able to recover from the memory of something very traumatizing. When there are lapses and the individual just get over a particular event or feeling that the event is happening at present time as in let's say a situation or event is over but the person still lives in the fear that it is happening again or it may happen again .PTSD can sometimes to an after effect of unending ASD.Unlike ASD this can last from months to years and reoccurring . Symptoms include isolation ,fear ,self harm, nightmares, sleeplessness etc.Treatments include therapy ,medications and consulting psychologists or psychiatric treatments and very supportive family.
Thankyou, hope this helped.
