How does the presentation (signs and symptoms) differ between an acute lymphocytic and acute myeloid leukemia? What are the common symptoms
Leukemia-is a gradually malignant progressive illness. It is a cancer of the white blood cells (cells that help our body fight infections). This blood cells form inside our bone marrow. In leukemia the bone marrow produces abnormal white blood cells. These cells crowd out the healthy blood cells and making it difficult for blood to do its function. The causes of leukemia is still unknown but there are certain knows risk factors associated with it such as smoking, down syndrome, chemotherapy, and ionizing radiation (radiation that transfer enough energy to release electrons from atoms or molecules, thereby ionizing them).
Acute lymphocytic leukemia - is a cancer of the lymphoid line of blood cells categorized by the growth of large numbers of immature lymphocytes. Most common type of leukemia in Children.
Acute Myeloid leukemia - is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. categorized by the growth of large numbers of immature myoblast. Most common type of leukemia in adults. This type of cancer gets worst quickly if left untreated.
The most common symptoms of both acute lymphotic leukemia and acute myeloid leukemia are shortness of breath, fatigue, easy bruising, fever, bleeding, under the skin and weight loss. The difference of their symptoms are in acute lymphotic leaukemia patient will also experience pain in the bones or stomach, feeling of fullness below the ribs and patient will usually have painless lumps in the neck, underarm and groin.
