In the procedure for the synthesis of hexaphenylbenzene, a Diels-alder reaction occurs and we needed to ensure all the starting materials were dry. After the reaction, we also washed with hexanes and toluene.

What is the purpose of this two things? also worth mentioning Silicon oil was used as a solvent

Solutions

Expert Solution

In the procedure of this reaction we have to ensure all the materials were dry before mixing of this into the pyrex tube because if material having some moisture then during heating it will be cause of SPATTERING means some drop of liquid will sustain in the reaction may reduce the product yield.

We have to use hexane and cold toluene to filter out the filtrate from the mixture of the teyraphenyl cyclo pentane and diphenyl acetylene which is firstly heated and then cooled it to get crystals from vacuum filtration by using buchner funnel and cryatals are separated to place in organic waste container after this we have to fed dry air to remove moisture of hexane and toluene. Crystal are further recrystallise to increase the yield of product.

If you have more of teyraphenyl cyclopentane and want to get more yield of it then u can use the silicone as a supplement solvent in the reaction to extraction.

Calculate the atom economy and reaction efficiency for the Diels Alder reaction.
Calculate the atom economy and reaction efficiency for the Diels Alder reaction. For the reagents, consider only the mass Mol. wt. of the 9-anthracenemethanol and N-methylmaleimide. Use proper significant figures, units and show all work. Atom economy (Mol, wt, desired product/combined Mol, wt. of all reagents) Reaction efficiency = atom economy x percent yield
