The very poor are eligible for Medicaid, those over 65 are eligible for Medicare, and those who are typically employed full time have insurance offered through their employer.
There are still millions of Americans without health insurance. While the Affordable Care Act, has closed the gap, it has not eliminated it.
How do we solve the problem? Think about the following options:
1. A single payer system, in which the government provides coverage to all, funded by the taxpayers.
2. Expansion of Medicaid.
3. Revision of the current private health insurance system.
The United States has a mixed public private system of health insurance. Around 16% of Americans are uninsured and these can be solved by providing equal medical care to all citizens irrespective of age color and gender in government sectors( Hospital ). Government should raise an additional funding for this to cover all the citizens, who seek medical care in government hospital. Thereby people without insurance will receive comprehensive and cost effective treatment.
A single payer system, in which the government cover all can be aceptable but the government need to invest additional funding from their side in addition to fund from taxpayers.
Medicaid programs are mainly focussed to particular group like children from low income family, pregnant women etc. If it is expaned to cover uninsured people, it will be beneficial for them too.
Even if the current private health insurance is revised, people from low income families still have to struggled to pay for it. Therefore the better option is the accessibility of free of cost care at government hospitals.
