6. Electromagnetism
a. Describe two ways to increase the strength of an electromagnet
b. Write two or three sentences to identify the energy conversion that takes place in an electric motor and to describe how electromagnetism is involved.
c. Write two or three sentences to compare the primary and secondary coils in a step-down transformer and to explain how electromagnetism is involved in its function.
d. What is the magnetic force on a particle that has -3.2 x 10^-19 C of charge and is moving at 2.5 x 10^7 m/s to the right through a magnetic field that is 0.24 T and pointing away from you? Specify both magnitude and direction in your answer.
a.We can increase the strength of an electromagnet by two ways
b.We know that the energy conversion that take place in an electric motor is by using several methods.Electricity is certainly needed for the working of an electric motor.we also know the fact that mechanical force is needed to pump the water from lower level to higher level.so we analysed that both electrical and mechanical energy is needed for the working of a motor.In an electric motor electrical energy is converted to mechanical energy.
Electromagnetic induction is used for this energy conversion by changing the voltage or we can say that the induced emf due to electric current causes the electromagnetic induction in an electric motor.
c.In a step down transformer the number of turns of the coil in the primary winding is greater than that in the secondary winding.This will definitly affect the working of the step down transformer.Mutual induction occurs between the windings which is responsible for its working.The emf induced between the two windings can be calculated using the number of turns in primary and secondary.so the amount of emf induced in the secondary is less,then the voltage is also less in the secondary winding.This is how electromagnetic induction takes place in the step down transformer.
d.Magnetic force,F=q*v*B where q=-3.2*10^-19 C,v=2.5*10^7 m/s and B=0.24 T.substitute these values in the equation
F=-3.2*10^-19*2.5*10^7*0.24=-1.92*10^-12
so magnetic force=-1.92*10^-12 .The direction is opposite to magnetic field
