T. Roosevelt was a three year-old toddler when the Civil War began, but it played a significant role in his life. The Civil War highlighted the division within his family as he was raised by both Confederate supporters from his mother’s side of the family and the Union which was supported by his father. His father greatly influenced his life later. His father Theodore Sr, was a devout Lincoln and Union supporter, who had developed the Allotment System plan, which amounted to a soldier’s payroll deduction program to support their respective families back home. In addition, Roosevelt Sr. helped found the New York City Children’s Aid Society, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Museum of Natural History amongst other projects. His political commitment to he Union despite of his personal affiliations with the Southerners as his in laws native place, influenced the young Teddy Roosevelt’s own ideas about justice and law. His father’s love for his beloved mother and her family’s support of the Confederacy, caused his father to pay $300.00 for a substitute and remain out of the war.
