Now a days many of the school children has diabetes mellitus. Hence it is the responsibility of school nurse to initiate care, provide guidelines and informations which helps the child to manage DM. There are certain guidelines which is essential for the care of children both at school and at home.They are as follows:

Diabetes medical management plan: This plan should be developed in the presence of parents and affected child.

* It is manadatory to rule out the frequency and the circumstances to monitor blood glucose levels.

* Encourage the active participation of a child in physical activity , helps to regulate blood glucose levels.

* Include the food contents, timings and amounts of snacks and meals.

* With the consent of child's physician,administer glucagon if there is any symptom of hypoglycemia . Monitor signs and provide treatment in case of hyperglycemia.

* The school nurse should collect all necessary materials, equipments including glucometer, adviced insulin medication needed for diabetes and urine and ketone monitoring strips etc. They have to maintain separate log book to include all details and records.

* The nurse should get emergency phone numbers of parents or guardians and diabetes health care teams.

* Provide arrangements for counselling which can help them improve their confidence and helps the nurse to monitor the condition of the child.

* An appropriate room is required to provide privacy for the child and also to keep the insulin in proper place.

Permission should be provided to use washroom and acess to oral fluids intake.
