1.Use the Virtual Library to conduct research on effective speaking skills. Create an outline including the most important information.
2. Explain the term “claim” as used in academic writing and give an example.
Speaking is an act of making vocal sounds. We can say that speaking means to converse, or expressing one's thoughts and feelings in spoken language. To speak often implies conveying information. .. Speaking skills are the skills that give us the ability to communicate effectively. Communication is more than speaking or writing. To be effective, communication requires the creation of a common understanding of ideas, desires and observations among people. Communication is a two-way exchange that involves both a presenter and an audience. A final, significant goal an effective informative speech is to make the audience remember. Most memorable speeches have emotional appeals that audiences continue to talk about long after the speech is delivered, and sometimes even after the life of the speaker.
In academic writing, an argument is usually a main idea, often called a “claim” or “thesis statement,” backed up with evidence that supports the idea. Points of view in academic writing can include an argument, a recommendation, interpretation of findings or evaluation of the work of others. In persuasive writing, each claim you make needs to be supported by some evidence, for example a reference to research findings or published sources. In literature, a claim is a statement that asserts something to be true. A claim can either be factual or a judgment. Claims can work on their own or in conjunction with other claims to form a larger argument. The word claim comes from the Latin word clamare, which means “to cry out, shout.”
