Jorge Rios's family is without health insurance. He works two jobs, neither of which provides health insurance. Her earns a total income of slightly above the level which would make his eligible for Medicaid in his state. Jorge was born in the U.S., but his brother, who lives with the family, is undocumented. Jorge is now trying to pay off the bills for his brother's treatment when he was recently seen in the emergency department. How is the family affected by the issues in the U.S. health insurance systems and what are some of the options to obtain health care or health care insurance?
Undocumented immigrants are foreign- born individuals residing in the U.S without authorization.They are not eligible to enroll in Medicare,Medicaid,or CHIP or to purchase coverage through the ACA marketplaces.
Jorge’s brother is an Undocumented immigrants. In U.S Undocumented immigrants aren’t eligible to buy marketplace health coverage, or for premium tax credits and other savings on marketplace plans.But he may apply for coverage on behalf of documented individuals as Jorge is a U.S natand he is eligible for Medicaid.
Undocumented immigrants can obtain low- cost care through community health centers which is often limited to preventive and primary care.Under federal law,hospitals are required to screen and stabilize every patient who seeks emergency care. Medicaid helps offset costs borne by hospitals in providing emergency care to undocumented immigrants by providing payments to hospitals for emergency care provided to individuals who are not eligible for Medicaid due to their immigration status.
