Solutions

Expert Solution

Ans.

  • Thiamine (vitamine B1) is one of the essential B complex vitamins that is needed in the body for the generation of energy from food.
  • In the efficient functioning of CNS and PNS, these vitamins play very important role.
  • Thiamine must be supply through the diet, as it is not produced endogenously in the human body.
  • Thiamine is soluble in water and liver act as it's primary storage site.
  • Thiamine deficiency can result in the reduced activity of thiamine dependent enzymes, which may lead to energy compromise by causing a series of metabolic events.
  • In thiamine deficiency, concentration of pyruvate increases because it's oxidative decarboxylation to acetyl CoA doesn't occur in deficiency of thiamine.
  • Then, the converion of this accumulated pyruvate into lactate occurs, which is catalyzed by lactate dehydrogenase enzyme.
  • This accumulation of pyruvate produces many symptoms such as, fatigue and muscle cramps.
