FROM YOUR STUDY OF MANAGEMENT, YOU HAVE BEEN TAUGHT THAT MANAGERS PERFORM SOME THREE MAJOR ROLES. OUTLINE ALL THESE ROLES AND EXPLAIN ALL THEIR ELEMENTS WITH PRACTICAL EXAMPLES.
From our study of management, it has been taught to us that there exists three main roles in the organisation that Mintzberg's suggests are the three most crucial managerial roles. To understand this concept in a better way, let's take an example of manager in an IT firm. He is a department manager of the Coding Project for the Bank. Now, the 3 main roles that he is percieved to perform are:
1. Informational Role: The first role that a manager is expected to perform is the informational role. How he transfers the information, understand it and communicate it in such a manner where people could understand it. By taking our example support a junior engineer is having a problem in a code. What if he goes to the manager to ask the solution of why the code is not working and the manager doesn't have any answet to it? It would be so embarassing and plus the employees wouldn't even consider him as a good manager. Thus, a manager should be able to transfer information and seek it too.
2. Decision Making Role: After the informational role, a manager should also be equipped with the decision making skill. Consider the example of what is happening around right now. Due to Covid-19, the world have decided to shut down the business. How a manager reacts and takes the decision to make the work still go? He thinks of making the people work from home! This is how a manager is expected to make good decisions out of any problem or opportunity.
3. Interpersonal Role: At last, apart from the informational and decision making role, a manager is expected to also have embedded the interpersonal role in him too. He should be able to communicate well with this employees. In this time of corona virus, how a manager is able to communicate and motivate the staff to keep the work going on even in this time of crisis is the example of the interpersonal role he shares with his team.
