A swimmer off coast swims southwest at 2 m/s relative to the coast when she notices a fish swimming at 10 m/s due east from her perspective.
Calculate the velocity of the fish relative to the coast.
Answer: Velocity of fish realtive to coast = 12 m/s
The swimmer is moving towards Southwest, with a velocity Vs = 2 m/s relative to coast.
The fish is swimming towards East with a velocity Vfs = 10 m/s relative to the swimmer.
Its clear from the fig that the fish is moving along +ve x-direction.
So, resolving the velocity of the swimmer along x and y directions gives,
The angle is the angle SW makes with South. It is
Now fish is moving with velocity Vfs relative to swimmer
The velocity of fish relative to coast is Vf
since fish is moving along x- direction, only x-component of Vs has to considered.
Vs sin 45 Vf=10m/s + Vs=2m/s Vs cos(45)
(V3), = V, sing ; (V), = V.coso
