16. Eugene has type O+ blood, and Matilda has type AB+ blood.
(a) Could they have a child that is Rh negative? Why or why not?
(b) List all possible blood types of their offspring.
Given data :
Eugene - O+
Matilda - AB+
Answers: Two Rh positive parents can have Rh negative child.
Rh factor is an antigen present in RBC. The persons having D antigen are called Rh positive and those without D antigen are called Rh negative.
Rh factor is inherited independently of the ABO blood type.
Each parent donates one their two alleles to the child.
Rh positive have two alleles : either Rh+/Rh+ or Rh+/Rh-.
Rh negative have two alleles : Rh-/Rh-.
If child inherits Rh+ from both parents the child will be Rh positive.
If child inherits Rh+ from one parent and Rh- from one parent, the child be Rh positive.
If child inherits Rh negative from both the parents, the child will be Rh negative.
The chances of offspring with negative Rh factor is 25%
b. The possible blood types of their offsprings will be A or B.
All blood group have two alleles-one from father and one from mother.
The alleles for AB blood group - A B
The alleles for O blood group - O O
Child inherits one alleles from each parent. If the child inherits, A allele from mother and O allele from father, the genotype will AO and the blood group will be "A".
If the child inherits B allele from mother and O allele from father ,the genotype will be BO and the blood group will be "B".
A and B alleles are dominant over O allele.
