A single product (A) moves in sequence through 3 operations: V, W, and X. The processing time at each operation (in minutes per unit) is 10, 20 and 10 respectively. If the process batch size and the transfer batch size are both 100, what is the total amount of time required to process the batch? If the transfer batch size is reduced to 50, now how much total time will be required to complete the batch (do not worry about inventory levels)?
A) When process batch size and transfer batch size are both 100
Processing time at V = 100*10 = 1000 minutes
Processing time at W = 100*20 = 2000 minutes
Processing time at X = 100*10 = 1000 minutes
Ans: Therefore, total time taken to produce 100 units = 4000 minutes.
B) When Transfer batch size is 50
In this scenario :-
(i) once 50 units are processed in the unit "V", the batch will be transferred to the next processing unit "W" and "W" will start processing that 50 unit batch while "V" continues to process the next 50 units.
a)Time taken to process the first batch by "V" = 50*10= 500 mnutes.
b)Time taken to process the first batch by " W" = 50* 20= 1000 minutes.
c) Time taken to process the second batch by "V" = 50*10= 500 minutes.
But (b) and (c) take place simultaneously. Hence actual time taken by both the process will be the highest of (b) and (c) i.e., 1000 minutes.
(ii) Similarly when "W" complete the process of first batch it will be transferred to "X" for further processing. At that time "W" and "X" will work simultaneously, where "W" will process the 2nd batch and "X" will process the first batch.
a) Time taken to process the second batch by "W" = 50*20= 1000 minutes
b) Time taken to process the first batch by " X" = 50*10= 500 minutes.
But (a) and (b) take place simultaneously. Hence actual time taken by both the process will be the highest of (a) and (b) i.e., 1000 minutes.
(iii) After the second batch is processed by "W" it will be transferred to "V" for further processing. Here the time taken will be 50*10 = 500 minutes
Ans : Therefore, the total time taken to process 100 units = 500+1000+1000+500 = 3000 minutes.
