Negative impact to build a wall between Mexico and American border:
The decision has been taken to protect American citizens from illegal activities, for overall homeland securities and to reduce strain on government resources. Illegal immigration in US costs millions of dollars in terms of loss in tax revenues and creates other burden upon government such as overburdening expenditure on social welfare. Hence, in order to restrict illegal border, US government thinks physical border to be necessary. US President wants a bigger wall to protect US jobs from the migrants.
However, there are arguments from experts against the border. According to environmentalists, a border wall would affect wildlife on both sides of the border and natural habitats. Digging holes, building complex tunnel system and other mechanical systems are harmful for the local environment. The boarder wall may also increase soil erosion and may alter natural flows of water along with pattern of wildfire. According to the proposal, the wall will pass through seven areas of Texas wildlife. A huge number of wildlife and species would be affected due to this project. Environmental degradation has long term effect on global environmental as well as economy.
Apart from environmental costs, there are some economic costs that both countries have to bear. There will be a decline in low cost workers in US and the economy is likely to even declining. The situation will be aggravated in the post corona situation during recessionary period.
Several research studies have found that the cost of building wall would cost $7 per US citizen, however, it would harm the college educated workers by $4.35 and would benefit less educated workers by an average of 36 cents. Instead of building the wall, reduction in trade volume with Mexico will have greater benefits to US.
