A scientific analysis of Jurassic park (first one)

Discuss what was scientifically correct and incorrect. Do you think that the scientifically incorrect part was done out ignorance of the laws of physics/principles of geology or do you think that it was a simple plot device? Why do you think that the creators of these works routinely break the laws of physics/principles of geology? How do you think this affects the public's understanding of science?

Expert Solution

I would start by saying it was a really good sci-"Fantasy" movie when it came in 1993. It also showed the whole world what science was learning about dinasours about that time mixed with a great deal of "Fantasies" . The way the movie had depicted the movement , body-language and intelligence of Dinasours was remarkable but far from the actual truth.

Here are the list of things which i feel was far from the Science-

1. The idea of recreating dinosaurs from preserved DNA seems unreal-

Dr Steve Brusatte said that to clone a dinosaur we would need the whole genome, and nobody's ever even found a little bit of dinosaur DNA . So we're talking about something that's really difficult, if not impossible as it may.

2. T. rex speed and senses

One of the most memorable scenes in the film “Jurassic Park” is the Jeep chase. it kind makes us feel as if theywere running at 20 km/h. but recent studies suggest that it got really good speed and could see things even if one does not move. science suggests that T. rex was a much more adept and vicious hunter than what even Spielberg’s movies portray. Not only was its eyesight not as bad as the movie makes it out to be (“He can’t see us if we don’t move”). Really though ?

3. Intelligence-

movie shows that dinasours were outsmarting Zoo guards and showed good hunting skills. That was untrue as science believes they were not even as intelligent as a Bird.

4. Body Features -

I must say that whatever they have done in inspiring the whole genration about Dinasours but it wasnt as accurate as it seemed. One of the biggest shifts in what scientists know about dinosaurs today versus 1993 — that dinosaurs had feathers — is something that is still struggling to find a foothold in popular perception as shown in the movie.

Now, Lets look at the positive side. despite having so many false informations, it was by far the most scientific movie about Dinasours in 1993 and it had inpired many budding scientists in the Era.

here are the 4 things that were close to the facts-

1. Velociraptors-

In Jurassic World, raptors hunt together, communicate in weird raptor voices, catch scents like reptilian bloodhounds and imprint, or take on the traits of their “alpha” (played by equally featherless human Chris Pratt) . Surprisingly, Barta (Paleontologist) says there’s a scientific basis for a lot of those decisions. “Imprinting is analogous to what some birds will do, and since we know birds are dinosaurs, imprinting is a plausible behavior,” he says. Following the same logic, it makes sense that if birds can communicate vocally, dinosaurs may have had that same ability.

2. The Vast Majority of Dinosaurs Were Plant Eaters.

Although that doesnt mean they were not killers.

3. The film portrayed dinos like animals, not monsters.

So, Even though the Film had many loopholes, it still was the most accurate Sci-Fi of the Decade.

You can do a BE analysis for one product or multiple products. What is the shortcoming of the multiple product analysis? What if we took that one step further and did a BE analysis on the entire company? What could be a drawback of that analysis? In BE analysis we talk about fixed and variable costs.
