This question is based in regard to Rachel dolezal.

Besides self-identifying as a member of a racialized group, what else seems to matter for proper, legitimate, etc. membership in that group? For example, does it matter how other people perceive our racial identity? Does our ancestry matter?

Racialism is a disease which is like cancer and has no cure completely. People do face racialism in the States or around the world. People face legitimately, in government offices or any other workplace. How well we must develop of thinking but people do practice the custom of racialism. Discriminating exists everywhere, and people have to face it.

Even police suspect the black people more, even if they are not involved in any offence. Earlier, black people were used as slaves, and was treated brutally but after the law, it all stopped but there are people who think black people are slaves of white.

If other people perceive them racially then it matters. It makes the person uneasy if he is judged by his race. People feel that they don’t belong to this world, and it breaks them internally.

In today’s time yes ancestors matter, because people are judged by that. If you are black then you will be judged. So, as per my opinion, it ancestors matter.
