In Victor Hugo’s novel

les Miserables, the main character Jean Valjean, an escaped prisoner, was

noted for his ability to climb up the corner formed by the intersection of two vertical perpendicular

walls. Find the minimum force with which he had to push on the wall while climbing. What is the

minimum coefficient of static friction required for him to be able to perform such a feat?

NOTE: My teacher says that the solution is not simply using the friction to counteract the gravity to push on him, Jean Valjean has his arms straight out to his sides (180 degrees) with one on each wall, and his pushing on the wall must be factored in.

Expert Solution

This is a physics puzzle problem. here friction force is balanced the both gravitational force and normal force. Here i am giving full solution of this problem. This is correct explanation of this problem so please check it and try to understand.
