On food labels, we can read the food-calories of the product.
The food calorie is written as “Cal” and it corresponds to
1,000 calories with the lower case ‘c’. In summary, one
food-calorie = 1 kcal = 1 Cal = 4,186 Joules
How many Joules will be released by combustion of 1 kg of rice, if
rice has 3,200 food-calories per kilogram? Show your work.
1 food-calorie =1 kcal =1 Cal =4186 Joules
So, energy released by combustion of 1 kg of rice = 3200 food-calories
= 3200 x 4186 Joules
= 13.3952 x 106 Joules
