Please review the Sports and Entertainment Law: The Bounty Program and the New Orleans Saints portion of your textbook. Why do you think everyone was so willing to go along with the bounty program? As a penalty, the Saints lost their head coach (Sean Payton) for one year, and Greg Williams was suspended indefinitely. Various other coaches were suspended, and the Saints paid a $500,000 fine. What are the flaws in thinking processes when we make decisions to go ahead with the bounty program? In your answers, you should also discuss the different ethical theories and standards being applied and how the ethical dilemmas should be resolved.
*Answer:
People were readily agreeing for participation in the bounty program as it was offering bonus to the winners as well as the participants and served as a great opportunity to win the overall NFC Championship. Money forms the most basic physiological need for everyone. Hence people try to fulfil the same by hook or by crook. The flaws of the bounty program had got covered by the monetary benefits associated with the game. This had given way to the logical thinking process and the teams were mostly concerned about the money, rather than the overall well being of the players.
The principles followed by the bounty program are totally against the moral principle followed by utilitarianism philosophy of ethical theories. There is no social good being served by such policies. Hence the thinking capacity of the members seem flawed when they ignore the damage done to the players and concentrate only on the money associated with such a program.
