What was the Niagara Movement? How did the Niagara Movement and the Springfield Race Riots impact the development of early civil rights organizations?

This was a movement that had been based on the civil rights of a particular group or organisation. The name of the group derives from the gathering that had been formed at the nigagara falls after 29 business men, clergy as well as teachers were not allowed to be entering in hotels in Buffalo.

The core principles were to oppose the philosophy of accommodationist, put forward by booker t Washington. The editor of Boston guardian had reprimanded Washington publicly. There was a draft constructed which included declaration of principles, which rejected the idea that negro Americans are inferior and would be submitting to oppression.

They wanted to bring about changes at the legal, economic as well as educational levels,. This movement was different from all other black organisations since there was a demand for educational as well as economic development. There was a powerful message being sent throughout the nation, to end racial discrimination. This took place in the year 1905.

The Springfield race riots took place in the year 1908. There were a many violent actions, in a series, carried out that had been initiated against the African Americans,in whichthere was involvement of a mob having 5000 white Americans as well as European immigrants. There was an arrest of two black men, with the suspicion of rape of two whites women.

The mob wanted to lynch the men, and it was found that the sherif had already transferred them out from the city for violence prevention. There was a huge violence where the black neighbourhoods were attacked and houses and businesses were destroyed.

There were a Number of deaths. Many black families fledged from Springfield, though, it cannot be identified as to how many families had left permanently. As a result of the riot, there was formation of the NAACP, whose work was primarily for the civil rights of the African Americans.
