The NCCA requires all athletes to be screened for
NCAA stands for National Collegiate Athletic Association. It is a non-profit organization that governs collegiate sports program in United States of America (USA). It covers many sports conducted in different schools of USA.
NCAA has banned different classes of drugs and any other substances which are chemically of pharmacologically related to those drugs because of their performance enhancing effect which can help an athlete to perform better than their competitor and adversely affect true competitive nature of a sports event.
The banned classes of drugs are:
1. Anaerobic agents
2. Stimulants
3. Alcohol and B blockers
4. Cannabinoids
5. Peptide hormones, growth factors and related substances and mimetics
6. Hormones and metabolic modulators (anti oestrogen)
7. Beta 2 agonists
8. Masking agents like diuretics
9. Narcotics
NCAA conducts screening urine testing of athletes for use of banned categories of drugs by them. It is done for its championships and also year around for some divisions of school like division I and division II which offer scholarships to athletes. Any student testing positive for use of performance enhancing drugs or tempering test results is penalized.
