Workplace incivility is a low intensity, rude and discourteous behaviour that is intend to harm the target. Incivility can be from the issues like cultural assumptions, making administrators reluctant to face it for fear of being as culturally less competent. Followal of some strategies can prevent these.
Talk to HR administrator or to bias response team to get a idea how the issues are handled.
Set expectations on team before something happens.
Check yourself and if you are passionate about the issue think about the level of personal disclosure that is appropriate in workplace.
Make sure the head of department have team’s back. If it manages people who work with internal or external customers they will always be on the receiving end of incivility.
In case of academic, incivility can be defined as students behaviour that negatively affect the learning environment. It is good to prevent the disruptive behaviour than stopping after it has begun. There are some strategies useful to prevent such issues.
Define and model the expectations so students will get the idea how others expect them to behave.
Decrease anonymity by having personal relationships with students so that they do not feel lost in the crowd.
Use informal early feedback to determine what is working and what will put on extra attention for them.
Encourage students active learning so they can be engaged with materials and with each other during class.
