In the American society today, many people have a low opinion of personal selling as a career because of personal experiences with sales people and the way sales people are often portrayed in TV sitcoms and movies. Watch the video "A Day in the Life of a Sales Representative." In the video, Ms. Little and Dr. Jarrell discuss the importance of personal selling. What excites you about the possibility of a career in sales? What turns you off? What products or services do you think you could sell successfully? Why?

Expert Solution

Solution:

Sales as a career excite me because of the nature of the job. The sales job is, of course, a pressure job where one has to undergo the pressure of meeting the sales targets failing which may even result in loss of jobs for sales representatives. However, the possibility of working as a sales representative excites me because of the challenges that are faced by salespeople in daily job life. These challenges include solving the customer pain points and helping customers understand the importance of the products I am selling which can add more convenience to the lives of the customers. Hence, salespeople re the face of the company, and thus the kind of responsibility that is on the shoulders of salespeople is an exciting factor of any job. Also, the job is not monotonous because selling involves different outlooks and experiences with different customers every day, and hence in the job, we get to learn a lot of interpersonal communication tactics that can be useful in personal lives as well. Hence, these are the ideas about working as a salesperson and it excites me to work as a salesperson for the products I am interested to sell.

The biggest turn off about the sales profession is the outlook people have about salespeople where people think that salespeople use tricks to fool customers to buy the products whereas this is not actually true. Salespeople focus more on building relationships than closing off the deals because building good relationships will improve the credibility of the salesperson more than the organization itself and this credibility will remain with the salesperson whichever company she works for.

I think the best possible products or services to sell would be the ones that actually add convenience to the lives of people with the products I am selling and solve their issues with the products or services I am selling. Also, It is a must thing for me as a salesperson to be interested in the product and also believe in the product completely for me to be successful as a salesperson. If I am skeptical about the product I will not enjoy the process of selling and exhaust myself which actually is the case with many sale professionals. Hence, selling products you believe in will add more element of interest in the sales job and help one to be successful in the sales job.

HEnce, these are the views about sales jobs and how they can be made interesting and effective to be successful in them.
