We communicate with others to share our thoughts and ideas. To communicate we need a language. Language has two parts such as language production and language comprehension.while communicating rather than restating old sentences we create new sentences. The ability of a human being to produce new sentences is a unique feature of human communication.
Humans start to use native language from the infancy.period.To start with babies use to cry as a way of communicating with parents. Then they start 'cooing', making vowel sounds like "aaa" ,"ooo","see" etc.along with their crying. The smallest unit of sound in every language are called phonemes. An infant between 2 to 4 months is capable of perceiving all phonemes, even those that are not needed in their language. But during this time they will not be able to distinguish among these sounds. This ability declines as they start to learn their native language. By about 6 months the babies start to produce meaningless repeating sounds called babbling, Here they use their lips and tongue in collaboration to produce babbling sounds. They may at this time imitate sounds. At this time they are experimenting with their vocalizations. From 6 months to 12 months they begin to realize certain phrases connecting it to the context such as 'bye- bye'.and wave their hands. The babies may begin to respond to their own names. At about 12 months their speaking begins with simple one words such as mama, hi, dada, etc. At this stage, their ability to comprehend the language is greater than their ability to speak it .At this age, a baby can understand approximately 50 words but will not be able to speak those words. They may usually understand commands such as come, take, etc.
The psychologist Jean Piaget's cognitive theory, this acquisition of language is taking place within the child's mind, and it is a cognitive development. Their cognitive development determines how much they perceive language. The child has to comprehend language before he/she starts to speak. The concepts in language must be understood by the infant to speak it . Children make connections with which they see and hear, the objects, events and situations. From these connections, they categorize them and generalize from it. These categorizations and generalizations help infants to overcome variabilities and leads to acquiring language. In infants, the cognitive development are rapidly through stages and language abilities also develop.through different stages. .From birth to 2 years is the sensorimotor stage is the stage of concept formation. They explore their surrounding using their senses and motor contact. Object permanence ( understanding the existence of objects) develops during this stage. When seeing an object at this stage that shake it, threw it and chew it to understand its features. This stage is important in concept formation.which latter help them to develop language.
