A new medical director begins work at a busy, underfunded community health center, but immediately encounters resistance from the overworked and frustrated staff when she brings up ideas for positive change. What strategies can she use to encourage and motivate change in the health center?

1. Set up an environment openness in which management will listen to and act upon employee’s ideas and suggestions.
2. Define a clear job responsibility by mentioning key performance indicators while making sure that the goals are challenging and attainable.
3. Provide appropriate authority to employees to take decisions as they perform their jobs.
4. Encourage and reward responsible risk taking.
5. Ensure adequate staffing to avoid over work and necessary support to perform the duties.
6. Provide in-service education and provide opportunities for growth and development and encourage them to use it.
7. Regular feedback to be taken from employees and supervisors. Let staff know where they stand in terms of accomplishments.
8. Assure adequate rest timing and off duty days to freshen up the mind.
