People suffering from OCD enagage in compulsive behaviours to overcome the anxiety caused by their obsessive thoughts.For instance,a person obsessed with hygience,would engage in compulsive hand washing behaviour.
These compulsions act as a source of reinforcement for the person experiencing obsessions, as the person repeatedly engages in them in a stereotyped manner.The individual does experience a sense of resistance to not indulge in such behaviours,but the over-powering obsessions compels the person to perform such behaviours to provide temporary relief from the anxiety being caused.
Since any relief which is provided by the compulsive behaviours is temporary and short lived,they keep reinforcing the original obsession and the person keeps carrying it out,turning it into a vicious cycle.When a person engages in compulsive behaviours they feel safe because of which such behaviours act as reinforcers to the person suffering from OCD.
