Donabedian’s is three components approach for examining and evaluating the quality of health care. The three components are Structures, Process and Outcome. The structure measures influence process measures, which in turn affect outcome measures. All together form the basis of what is required for an effective suite of measures.
Structure: describes the context in which care is delivered, including hospital buildings, staff, financing, and equipment,
Process: the transactions between patients and providers throughout the delivery of healthcare. Finally, outcomes refer to the effects of healthcare on the health status of patients and populations and
Outcomes: refer to the effects of healthcare on the health status of patients and populations
Measurement or Balancing: for improvement has an additional component (balancing measures). Component reflect unintended and/or wider consequences of the change that can be positive or negative. It is about recognizing these and attempting to measure them and/or reduce their impact if necessary.
Model is flexible enough for application in diverse healthcare settings and among various levels within a delivery system.
