Que.Using the traits of “subcultures” and “counter-cultures” answer the following questions:
What did you like and dislike about the “Shaker Life”? What traits would lead you to classify the Shakers as a subculture?

Shakers were a community that were derived from English Quakers. Shakers came to New York from Manchester, England, under the leadership of Ann Lee in 1774, at that time they were only eight members. They flourished well during the eighteenth and nineteenth century. They were admired for their orderly and disciplined life, they were prosperous communities, and had model farms. They welcomed outsiders with warmth and dealt fairly with them. They were hardworking community and many inventions were the result of their ingenuity. They were criticized for their emphasizes on celibacy, opposition to child bearing, bizzare connection with the spiritual world. They rejected the sacraments of christianity and inspirations from the Bible.
Shakers believed in Jesus Christ and followed the values of brotherhood and love of Christianity. They believed in the basic tenets of Christianity. These traits of Shakers make them a subculture of Christian religion.
