Explain the following causes of color:

a. Why are rubies red? They are basically single crystals of Al2O3 with 1% of Cr impurities. Bulk Al2O3 has a band gap of 8.8 eV.

b. Contrast the different causes of color in chlorophyll, in Si and in the gemstone Al2O3.

Solutions

Expert Solution

A.) first of all we know that Ruby is a crystal of a Al2O3 and due to presence of very minute quantity or percentage of chromium it looks red. In Crystal to replace aluminium atom balancing the charge chromium has to lose three electron and become chromium +3 but as we know that chromium +3 are larger than aluminium ion and the electron orbitals of chromium +3 are in different direction then of aluminium and that’s why the octahedral arrangement of crystal get distorted  and this lead to change in energy gap of the crystal this energy gap corresponds to the absorption in Ultraviolet  and yellow green region so when a white light falls on Crystal It absorbs the yellow and the green light and so the crystals looks red.

B.) Chlorophyll is a pigment that absorb mostly the red and blue light of the specific wavelengths and reflects the green colour light and that’s why it looks green. This absorption of a specific wavelength of light is due to presence of a band gap of a particular energy and similar is the reason for the other gemstone of Al2O3 they have a particular colour because of the absorption of light of a particular color.

The coat color in mink is controlled by two codominant alleles at a single locus. Red coat color is produced by the genotype R1R1, silver coat by the genotype R1R2, and platinum color by R2R2. White spotting of the coat is a recessive trait found with the genotype ss. Solid coat color is found with the S- genotype. Two crosses are made between mink. Cross 1 is the cross of a solid, silver mink to one that is solid, platinum....

A population of ants has a body color that is either red or black. The color is a result of one gene, with two alleles: The "B" allele (dominant) produces the black color, while the "b" allele (recessive) produces the red color. The gene system demonstrates complete dominance. The population is in HardyWeinberg equilibrium. In this population there are 38 black ants while there are 162 red ones. Determine the following genotypic and allele frequencies: Genotypic frequencies : Freq *...

In the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, wild type eye color is a brick red color and is produced by the action of two genes, one producing red color, the other brown. Vermilion is an X-linked recessive mutation that results in a bright red eye. Brown is an autosomal recessive mutation that results in a brown eye. Flies carrying both the vermilion and brown mutations produce no pigment and have white eyes. True breeding Vermilion eyed females are crossed to brown...

Oxygenated hemoglobin absorbs weakly in the red (hence its red color) and strongly in the near infrared, whereas deoxygenated hemoglobin has the opposite absorption. This fact is used in a "pulse oximeter" to measure oxygen saturation in arterial blood. The device clips onto the end of a person's finger and has two light-emitting diodes—a red (632 nm) and an infrared (930 nm)—and a photocell that detects the amount of light transmitted through the finger at each wavelength. Does Red Increase Men’s Attraction to Women? A study1 examines the impact of the color red on how attractive men perceive women to be. In the study, men were randomly divided into two groups and were asked to rate the attractiveness of women on a scale of 1 (not at all attractive) to 9 (extremely attractive). Men in one group were shown pictures of women on a white background while the men in the other group were shown the same...

A study of the effect of exposure to color (red or blue) on the ability to solve puzzles used 42 subjects. Half the subjects (21) were asked to solve a series of puzzles while in a red-colored environment. The other half were asked to solve the same series of puzzles while in a bluecolored environment. The time taken to solve the puzzles was recorded for each subject. Due to the association of urgency with red, researchers believe those exposed to...
