A researcher studies the role of the brain chemical serotonin in aggression. One sample of rats receives a placebo while another sample of rats receives a drug that lowers brain levels of serotonin. Then the researcher tests the animals by recording the number of aggressive responses each of the rats display. What statistical test could be used to analyze data from this study?

a.

Independent measures t-test

b.

Independent measures ANOVA

c.

Repeated measures t-test

d.

Both a and b

Solutions

Expert Solution

Definition of some concepts

A. Independent Measure t-test

It is a statistical computation through which researcher wants to see difference between two mean score of two different group.

Example Suppose researcher wants to know if a health drink has any effect on people. He might take two groups and will give health group to one group and nothing to another group to see any kind of difference.

B. Independent measures ANOVA

An independent measure of Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) is a statistical computation through which researcher want to compare 3 different groups based on 3 individual mean score.

Example In this case, researcher will work with more than two groups.

C. Repeated measures t-test

This statistical computation is used for within group design. If researcher wants to know the mean difference between individuals within a group, he can use this statistical computation.

Hence, the correct answer of this question is Independent measures t-test. Because, in this case researcher wanted to see the brain chemical serotonin in aggression and he took two groups of rat, one group received drug and another group received nothing.

A researcher conducts an independent-measures study to examine how the brain chemical serotonin is related to aggression. One sample of rats serves as a control group and receives a placebo that does not affect normal levels of serotonin. A second sample of rats, low serotonin group, receives a drug that lowers brain levels of serotonin. Albert Bandura has conducted a number of studies on aggression in children. In one study, one group of nursery school children were shown a film of adults punching, hitting (with a hammer), kicking, and throwing a large rubber Bobo doll. Another group was not shown the film. Afterward, both groups were allowed to play with Bobo dolls in a playroom, and the number of violent contacts were measured in each child. Let us imagine that we replicated this study and...

Related T-Test Sample 1. A researcher is interested in testing whether rats learned a maze after daily training sessions. The researcher recorded the number of errors committed by each rat before any training in the maze. Then, the researcher recorded the number of errors made by each rat after training. The scores below summarize the errors by each rat before and after training. Perform a dependent-sample (repeated-measures) t-test on the scores to test whether or not the number of errors...
