The mean pulse rate of the entire population of adult men is 70 beats per minute. A sample of 10 adult male patients is given a new drug, and after several minutes, their mean pulse rate is measured at 75 beats per minute with a standard deviation of 8 bpm. Do I have sufficient evidence to support my claim that this drug is effective in raising the heart beat of male patients?
a. State the null and alternative hypotheses using correct notation.
b. Report the test statistic and P-value.
c. Present your conclusions.
a)
Null hypothesis
Alternative hypothesis
b)
We have for given sample,
Population mean for given sample=70
Sample mean=75
Sample standard deviation s=8
Sample size =n=10
Degree of freedom = n-1 =9
t test statistic formula is
=1.98
P value is 0.0395..............by using Excel command TDIST(1.98,9,1)
P value is 0.0395 < 0.05
Therefore, we reject H0 at level of significance 0.05.
c)
Conclusion: We have sufficient evidence at to say that, this drug is effective in raising the heart beat of male patients.
