You determine the patient Y.L. understands your teaching about treating hypoglycemia if she states, “if my blood sugar is low, I should first have”:
a. An apple with milk
b. Peanut butter sandwich
c. Fruit juice or regular soda
d. Crackers with cheese slices
Option c) Fruit juice or regular soda is the correct answer
Reason -hypoglycemia is a condition where the blood glucose level is low, less than 70mg/dl, therefore glucose has to be given to maintain the blood glucose level. fruit juice or soda contain a good amount of sugar and also a fast acting carbohydrates thus increase the blood sugar rapidly
a) peanut butter sandwich- peanut butter contains both protein and carbohydates and does not act rapidly to increase the glucose level
b) an apply with milk- milk has a GIycemic load of 36-42 hence does not have much effect on blood glucose level, an apple contains sugar in the form of fructose which leads to less sugar and insulin in the blood stream. taking apple with milk can lower the blood glucose level
d)crackers with cheese slices- cheese slices contains fats and crackers has fiber. A combination of crackers with cheese slices will not help in increasing the glucose level.
