What are the major 3 transistor innovations in recent 15 years and related device performance improvement? What is the physics to limit continuously downscaling and ends Moore’s law? What are the 2 major reasons to continuously scale down?
SIO (silicon on insulator) and FinFet ( fin shaped field effect transistor ) these are the transistors that we will see in the chip in near future because there have less leakage power, low variation of threshold voltage and have high switching speed.
Limitations to mores law :
Moores law has almost came to end because we cannot scale the technology i. e scaling the technology means reducing the gap between source and drain( channel length).
As transistors are doubling in a single chip there will be more heating problem and complexity to connect million of cells gets increases along with fabricating of chip.
channel(region ) that carries the electrical current through the transistor cannot always contain it. This generates heat which can wear out the transistors more quickly, making them even more susceptible to leakage.
Reasons for scaling down:
1. We are scaling because delay of gates gets decreased so we get high performance devices.
2. As technology is shrinking more number of cells can be placed in a single chip as size of transistor gets halved.
