Mr. Yo has recently traveled to Mexico on vacation. While there on his last morning of vacation, he ordered a large cheese and spinach omelet. He flew home that afternoon, and by midnight, Mr. Yo became very ill and sought emergency care.

What symptoms would the nurse recognize that are consistent with food poisoning?

Mr. Yo is diagnosed with food poisoning (suspected salmonellosis). The physician treating Mr. Yo has given orders that he can be discharged home to rest while symptoms abate. Moaning, Mr. Yo asks, "How long am I going to feel like this, and why aren't you going to give me something to feel better?"

How should the doctor and/or nurse respond to Mr. Yo's questions?

What discharge teaching should the nurse provide to Mr. Yo?

Mr. Yo would have symptoms like

  • Diarrhea will be present which might include stool with blood
  • He will have severe abdominal pain
  • Fever and chills will accompany his food poisoning
  • Loss of appetite and resistant to take food
  • Fatigue and dehydration can occur due to diarrhea
  • Headache is a common symptoms in food poisoning

Doctor response to him on treatment

  • You are suspected of being infected by salmonella Mr. Yo so the speciality of this infection is that these microbe produce a toxin into the gastrointestinal tract which cause food poisoning and diarrhea, pain. So only management for this is replacement of fluid and antidiarrheals. Antibiotic will not be effective against this because the toxin cannot be destroyed by antibiotic. This will resolve automatically in 6 days or less

Discharge teaching

Hello Mr.yo plz note the following things as you are getting discharged

  • Precautions should be taken to avoid reinfection and spread of infection
  • Food should be cooked well and promptly refrigerated
  • Hands should be washed well
  • Toilet should be used when needed
  • Food like EEG and meat should be avoided for few days
  • If symptoms does not reduce in 3 days then it might be due to blood infestation of the salmonella so if it occur the antibiotic should be started
  • Use plenty of fluids
