President Donald Trump's proposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. The proposed 25 % levy on all steel imports and 10 % levy on aluminum has garnered widespread international criticism, with U.S. trade partners and allies already threatening to retaliate.Downstream producers of steel and aluminum products including car, plane and consumer goods manufacturers say it will jack up their costs, and experts fear a trade war that could harm global growth.
2. How has China retaliated to U.S. actions ?
Beijing announced that it would retaliate against new US tariffs
on $50bn in Chinese imports that will go into effect in few days
and taking the world’s two largest economies to the brink of a
full-scale trade war.The new US import duties, aimed at forcing
Beijing to stop what the White House claims has been
systematic theft of US intellectual property, will apply to
products ranging from cars and helicopters to bulldozers and
industrial tools and machinery.
In response, China’s finance ministry said it would begin imposing
its own 25 % tariffs on 545 categories of US products worth $34bn
including soyabeans, beef, whiskey and off-road vehicles on recent
date. It also threatened to add a further $16bn later, targeting US
energy exports such as coal and crude oil.
China’s commerce ministry said that it would immediately introduce
countermeasures of the same scale and strength though it did not
immediately provide a full list of the tariffs or details about
when they would be imposed. The commerce ministry says all the
economic and trade-related achievements previously reached by the
two sides will be rendered invalid referring to the results of
earlier rounds of China-US trade talks.
