I have to write an assignment using either a theory of “critical criminology" or an "integrative theory" to explain why Harold Shipman killed his patients. I am really struggling to find a theory that explains Shipman. Any help or guidance is appreciated.
Introduction-The term critical criminology refers to the combination of various criminological terms which belongs to various perspectives of criminal activities as well as an understanding of evidence, laws, behavior etc.
The critical criminology is an umbrella term for a variety of criminological theories and perspectives that challenges core assumption of mainstream criminology.
Case analysis- The case of Harold Fredrick Shipman, was one of the most prolific serial killers in recorded criminal history. Shipman was guilty of the murder of fifteen patients in his care. If we analyze the case we can find some specific perspectives and terms of criminology which not only belong to criminal activities but also with psychology and anti-social behavior. The inquiry identified 218 victims and estimated total his victims approx. 250 or more. The Shipman was a medical practitioner, he was caught forging prescription of pethidine for his own use so that we can see that he was a drug addict and was fined several times. In March 1998, many patients identified his practice for a large number of death so that the matter was brought to local police but they do not have enough evidence to confirm the situation. The case of Shipman opens various perspectives of mental disorder, substance abuse, and mass murder. Police had investigated for a long time and found him guilty for the murder of his patients by the use of diamorphine.
The case analysis of Shipman can be considered with various social, criminal, mental perspectives so that we can examine the critical criminology or integrative theory of criminal activities.
