In the physical world, and in real time, robots are artefacts that feel and function. A smartphone is a (domestic) robot according to this definition. It has not only microphones but also a variety of proprioceptive sensors which allow it to know when its orientation is changing or dropping. The range of behavior involves communicating with its owner, and sending information to other devices like instructions. The same applies to other game consoles and digital home assistants—"smart speakers" / microphones such as Google Home, Amazon's Echo (Alexa), or Cortana from Microsoft.

Certain qualities will become more sought after in the workforce as automation reduces the need for administrative skills. These include so-called "soft competencies" such as confidence, motivation, communication and resilience. "It has long been known that private schools are putting a great deal of effort into ensuring that their pupils have these skills, and they will become even more important in a competitive labor market."

Re-training for new jobs will also become a vital skill, and it is more able-bodied individuals from wealthy backgrounds, the report says. This can also be seen in the gap in post-graduate education, with people in the UK with middle class or disadvantaged backgrounds being much less likely to re-train after college.

Up to 50 percent of workers are at risk in developing countries, although others point out that only basic activities – rather than whole careers would be automated. Economists also note that new types of employment are likely to be generated, although it is difficult to predict exactly when, and how many.

Technology poses problems which are central to the defense of basic human rights, such as privacy and freedom of speech. Such issues raise liability for the tech firms that make such goods. They also call, in our opinion, for careful policy regulation and the establishment of norms around appropriate uses. Within a democratic republic, our elected officials are no substitute for decision-making on the issues requiring balancing public protection with the integrity of our political freedoms.
