2. The average distance between two neighboring stars in our galaxy is about 5 light-years. (a)
How many years would it take the Voyager 1 Space Probe to travel 5 light-years?
(b) If an alien civilization built a spaceship that can travel 5
light-years in 1000 years. How many kilometers does this spaceship
travel in 1 second? (hint: Google “how far is 1 light-year”)
3. (a) How many minutes would it take the alien spaceship in
question 2 to go from Earth to the moon?
(b) How many minutes would it take Voyager 1 to travel the same distance? (hint: Google “average distance between Earth and Moon”)
2.
(a) The Voyager 1 has a speed of 62140 km/hr or 1726.11 m/s.
The ditance between the two stars = 5 light years = 4.73 x 1013 km
So, the Voyager 1 will take (4.73 x 1013 km )/(62140 km/hr) = 7.6 x 108 hr = 86893.2 years to travel 5 light years.
(b) The speed of the spaceship built by the alien civilization is
Heence, the spaceship will travel 1500 km in 1 second.
3.
(a) The average distance between the Earth and the Moon is 384400 km.
Therefore, that alien spaceship will take (384400 km)/(1500 km/s) = 256.27 s = 4.27 minutes
(b) And the Voyager 1 will take (384400 km)/(62140 km/hr)= 6.186 hr = 371.16 minutes
