The increase in suicide rate in Fiji and Pacific Island has been alarming, reaching up to 30 per 100,000 in Samoa and Micronesia. The population that consist of suicide victims gets younger each year. The statistical data of suicide is reflective of the dysfunctional structure (socio-economic-psychological) of the island. The two main factor that contributes to this national tragedy is economic(unemployment, poverty) and national low budget devoted to the mental health care of the people. According to The Trading Economics(2018), the growth in the unemployment rate has increased to 6.31 in 2017 from 6.24 in 2016. This is reflective of a society that is deeply burdened by poverty, lack of resources and homelessness. The poverty conditions, lack of basic resources to survive, increase homeless condition are not just symptomatic of crippling economic condition of the country but also effects the psychological well being of the country people. This state creates a condition of helplessness and hopelessness among the unemployed section of the society, thereby creating mass depression and anxiety. Due to government's policy of not prioritizing the mental health care and its accessibility to people, has developed a stigma about mental health and increase in people's resistance to seek professional counselling when needed. This has in return had made the country extremely vulnerable to depression and chronic sadness Therefore, the increase in suicide rates.
Ethical governance that focus on designating a policy that interacts with economic upliftment and a society that is design to maintain stability, equality and inclusion of norms that enhances economic and cultural empowerment, should be incorporated by the government of Fiji and other Pacific Islands. A detailed policy towards the mental health of its population should be formatted, which includes creating awareness of depression and other disorder, establish mental health institutionsts for easy accessibility and introducing counselling in schools . This will allow the general population to seek help when needed. Government should also structure the economy of the country that focuses on socialising economic growth of a common man. Creating new jobs, social welfare programme to advice and guide those who seek employment and formatting a financial welfare system to give monthly allowance to the unemployed section of the society, would stabilise the economic depravity. Suicide is a national concern and can only be tackled with ethical and sensible governance.
