DOES THE GOOD LIFE DEPEND UPON OBJECTIVE VALUE?
You have read different and in some ways, opposing, viewpoints on what is necessary to live a good life.
The assignment:
One of the most important things about human beings is that they are social animals and this would mean that they would always look for objective values that would help them recognition and appreciation from others. When people look to satisfy others, they may not always derive happiness and satisfaction because at times they would look for objective values not for their own sake but for others. Subjective values on the other hand are more personal and more fulfilling. This would mean that people would be happier and more satisfied if they able to live and experience life as per their own willingness and wishes.
Pursuing objective values would only fulfil the social norms and laws of the land. This wouldn’t mean that one is consciously pursuing them. When one is able to create value through one’s actions for oneself, one would be more satisfied. This is because intrinsic motivation is stronger than external motivation. When people start acting for the sake of satisfying others, they wouldn’t experience life fully because they might need to change themselves and their behaviours to suit the society in which they live. So, in my opinion, objective values wouldn’t bring happiness and satisfaction all the time.
