A company has been asked to design a steering wheel for a new General Motors truck. The wheel is to be used on three different trucks and allows for varying electronics on the steering wheel. In the space provided below, list five things that should be considered when designing the steering wheel. Also provide a brief explanation for why each design criteria was chosen. Use five design criteria to evaluate them using the digital logic approach. Use digital logic approach to determine the weight given for each design criteria.

Five things that should be considered when designing a steering wheel:

  • Size – the size of the wheel has an effect on the efforts made by the driver to turn the vehicle. The larger the size, less is the effort required to turn the vehicle. Hence size should be considered while designing the wheel.
  • Design of a proper reserve power supply – this is required to operate the vehicle even if the entire vehicle loses the electrical power. This can retain the power even after the ignition is switched off.
  • Flexibility – a flexible steering coupler is required to allow for slight variation between shaft and steering gear. It also absorbs vibrations.
  • Effectiveness – the design that I use for steering wheel should be compliant with the driver. This is really a challenge.
  • Safety – the safety of the driver should be considered while designing the steering wheel. Because this is the one which decides in which direction the vehicle should go.

Usage of each design criteria:

There is increased attention for vehicle interiors, comfort and safety, the steering wheel has become feature of interest for the customers and also as a point of safety. The society of automotive engineers provides certain guidelines for selection of design.

There is software that uses the digital human models (DHM). The usage of this model is considered to be cost effective for the purpose of designing the steering wheel.

You have been asked by the president of your company to evaluate the proposed acquisition of a new special-purpose truck. The truck’s basic price is $50,000, and it will cost another $10,000 to modify it for special use by your firm. The truck falls in the MACRS 3-year class, and it will be sold after three years for $20,000. The applicable depreciation rates are 33%, 45%, 15%, and 7%. Use of the truck will require an increase in net operating...
