) What are the differences in Levoquin, Penicillin, Erythromycin, Doxycycline and their effects on different organisms and give examples?
Please provide a reference please thank you.
Antibiotics: Any substance that can destroy the or inhibit the growth of bacteria and similar microorganisms is called an Antibiotic.
Differences in levoquin, Penicillin, Erythromycin and doxycycline and its effects on different organisms:
* Levoquin: Levoquin is the trade name for Levofloxacin. It is a broad spectrum antibiotic , used to treat a number of infections.
(Differences in the areas of chemical structure, action, effects on different organisms etc)
a) it is a third generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic.Molecular formula is C18H20FN304
b) It act by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase, an enzyme needed for DNA replication , there by blocking bacterial growth.
c) It is broad spectrum antibiotic, used in the treatment of number infections such as urinary tract infections, pneumonia , sinusitis, gastroenteritis etc.
* Penicillin : Any of a group of narrow spectrum antibiotics obtained or synthesized from Penicillium molds.
a) Penicillin has a beta lactum structure
b) it kills the bacteria by inhibiting the bacterial cell wall synthesis.
c) Most are active against Gram - positive bacteria They are used in the treatment of various infections and diseases such as pneumonia, other streptococcal infections arthritis, antrax, Neurosyphillis etc.
* Erythromycin : Erythromycin is a macroliide antibiotics , produced by an actinomycete of the genus Streptomyces.
( Actinomycete : Any of various filamentous bacteria, that resemble fungi. Some actinomycetes are disease producing, and some are sources of Antibiotics).
a) A macrilide is a macrocyclic lactone with a ring of atleast 12 atoms
b) It inhibits the bacterial growth by inhibiting protein synthesis of bacterial cell and thereby replication of bacterial cell.
c) It used in the treatment of streptococcal infections, pneumococcal, staphylococcal , Mycoplasmal infections , chlamydial infections .
* Doxycycline: A broad spectrum antibiotic, derived from Tetracycline . Tetracycline is an Antibiotic produced by Streptomyces bacteria .
a) chemical formula: C22H24N2O8
b) It is inhibiting the bacterial growth by affecting its protein synthesis and replication.
c)It is a broad spectrum antibiotic, effective against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. It also used in typphus fever, Rocky mountain spotted fever( tick- borne disease) , Rickettsial pox, Q fever and bacterial infections such as urinary tract infections and respiratory tract infections.
