450 B.C. – Golden Age of Greece
Hippocrates (Greek doctor, father of modern medication)
* Denied that gods/evil spirits caused mental illness.
* Viewed unusual conduct and illness in general as having inner causes, and consequently having organic natures or etiologies.
* Treatment was to adjust the earth (quiet life, restraint, exercise, and forbearance from abundance).
* Believed patients expected to pick wellbeing over mental illness.
1800s – Reforms in Mental Health Treatment
Benjamin Rush (Leitch, 1978).
* Published the main American course reading on psychiatry, Mental Inquiries and Observations upon the Diseases of the Mind.
* Believed the reason for mental illness was introduction to serious mental and social stressors.
* Treatment was "moral management ", which concentrated on the patient's social, individual, and word related necessities (physical work, otherworldly conversation, empathetic treatment).
1900s – Modern Era
