A well insulated nozzle with a 0.005 m2 inlet cross section at 15 MPa and 673 K water vapor enters at a speed of 25 m / s. The pressure of the steam-liquid mixture, whose quality is 80% at the nozzle outlet, was measured as 4.688 MPa. Work done on the nozzle is neglected. So,

a) Speed at the nozzle outlet (m / s)

b) Mass flow (kg / s),

c) Calculate the exit cross section of the nozzle (m2)

Solutions

Expert Solution

steps:-

First we make a rough diagram of nozzle and name section 1-1 at inlet and section 2-2 outlet. from Steam table we obtained property of inlet and outlet of nozzle.

Apply energy equation between inlet and outlet .we consider only flow energy and kinetic energy other energy is does not change so don't write energy equation from here we find velocity of outlet of nozzle at last we calculate area of exit of nozzle and mass flow rate of steam

concept:- this is steam density is change at inlet and outlet we can't apply volume conservation lae here like water.we apply mass conservation law.

A rigid, well-insulated tank contains a two-phase mixture consisting of 0.005 ft3 of saturated liquid water and 2.7 ft3 of saturated water vapor, initially at 14.7 lbf/in.2 A paddle wheel stirs the mixture until only saturated vapor remains in the tank. Kinetic and potential energy effects are negligible. For the water, determine the amount of energy transfer by work, in Btu.

Refrigerant 134a enters a well-insulated nozzle at 14 bar, 60°C, with a velocity of 37 m/s and exits at 1.2 bar with a velocity of 460 m/s. For steady-state operation, and neglecting potential energy effects, determine the exit temperature, in °C.

A steel wire with a cross-section area 2.5X10^-3 m2 and a length of 10 m is used to pull a truck on the road. The truck is 10 tons and the friction coefficient between the tires and road is 0.25N/kg. Steel has a Young’s modulus 250MPa. Suppose this wire contain surface cracks. Determine the largest linear size of the surface crack so that the wire will not fail due to fracture in this application. Kc = 0.1 MPa m^0.5

6. Mike Faraday folds 4 meters of copper wire (cross-section 10-7 m2) into a square and holds it in a uniform magnetic field of strength 2.0 Tesla. The field passes directly through the “circuit”—pointing towards Mike’s face as he looks down at his square. a) Over what time interval should Mike’s assistant crank up the field to 5.0 Tesla if Mike hopes to achieve a current of 0.5 A? b) Will Mike observe a clockwise current or a counterclockwise current?
